What is an MSIC?

Since 2006, the Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC) has served as a nationally consistent identification card which confirms that the holder has met the minimum background checking requirements to work in a maritime and/or offshore security zone in Australia.

MSICs are valid for up to four years with a background check required every two years. MSIC applicants may choose either a four year or two year MSIC.

National Identity Card - Not a Specific Facility Access Card

MSICs are issued to individuals and provide a nationally consistent approach to establishing that a minimum set of security requirements have been met by the card holder. MSIC are accepted nationwide and may serve as a form of identity. An MSIC is not an access card - the relevant authority at each port or facility still controls access to its maritime security zones.

Because an MSIC is not an access control card, possession of an MSIC does not provide the right of entry to any facility within a maritime security zone.

Access to maritime security zones is managed by the facility operator.
